My husband and I have a very unique situation. We lived in the Seacoast area of NH. We sold our home in September of 2018. We then headed south for the winter in several places. Our goal was to find "the place" to eventually retire to that had a nice climate, four seasons without harsh winters. We considered TN and spent some time there recently. We just weren't "feeling" it. We then headed up to North Carolina. Its a lovely place, but our concern were the horrible humid summers. My husband still works. He commutes out of Logan airport.
We considered VA and PA, but in doing research we are finding a lot reasons why not to move to those states. Some have to deal with taxes and fees and crime and health care accessibility. We have children that live all over the country and at this time moving close to any one of them doesn't make sense. We both have looked at each other and say "why did we ever leave NH?" Two reasons for me were ticks and winter. Do these negatives outweigh all the pluses? Low crime, good health care, ocean, mountains, hiking are some of those positives.
We have so much anxiety over trying to pick the right place for us. Our taxes in our Seacoast neighborhood were high. I'm looking for other opinions and knowledge about NH. Can we find a not so high tax burden that has proximity to stores, restaurants, and healthcare? Help???
I like the eastern side of the Lakes Region for reasonable housing prices (away from the lake) and low property taxes. I would look into Alton or Wakefield areas. They have most of your basic amenities nearby or an easy drive to the Seacoast (Dover and Portsmouth).
Many Lakes Region towns have reasonable property taxes. That said: medical care, overall in the region, is lackluster. Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia just closed their maternity ward & added more opioid treatment. Dental care is generally abysmal also.
Hate to say it, but the area has serious issues with getting & finding quality healthcare.
