Hello everyone-
We are considering moving to Bow to be closer to family. We are currently in CT and having amazing public schools. Kids have IEPs for ADHD and we are beyond pleased with their accommodations. Does anyone have a feeling on Bow and their success with special education needs? We don’t need to make this move, and while family is important, my kids’ education and stability are more critical. We are looking for an inclusive school/town that welcomes us. My biggest fear is my kids not adjusting or bullying, etc- which is not tolerated in our town. Kids will be in 5th and 6th. Thanks so much for this wonderful forum!

You should know that local taxpayers foot most of the bill for special education in NH. Funds come from local property taxes. The US government does give special education grants to local schools. The State of New Hampshire does not collect an income tax on salaries, wages and capital gains and a sales tax on goods. This leaves the state precious little to distribute to local school districts in support of special education.

If the child's IEP requires medical services and supports, this may be partially covered by Medicaid.

Thanks so much. As much as I complain about the CT income tax, there is no doubt that we get an incredible education system in part due to it. Another factor to consider.

If your kids are happy and doing well at their school in CT, then don't move to NH. And no child enjoys moving to a new school and having to make new friends. And it's especially hard on students with special needs.

I have heard stories of bullying problems at schools in several NH towns, and parents of the victims were not happy with how the schools responded.
