Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good (and reasonably priced) chimney sweep?
I'd appreciate it!

Thanks in advance,
lisa

sorry, Lisa. I'm no help on this one. In our old house - we hardly ever used the fireplaces (my dad keeps designing houses so airtight, you have to open a window so the chimney will draw - and that sorta defeats the purpose) and in their new house they didn't put in a fireplace.

Hi Lisa!,

This might sound strange; however, I used t be a chimney sweep.
I owned two chimney servicing companies out here in SoCal and have serviced hundreds of chimneys before I got tired of all that soot.

Your best bet is to find one that is a member of the "National Chimney Sweep Guild" and is "CSIA Certified". If they are, these logos should be in their ad.

I'm not sure what they charge in NH; however, I was charging an average of $125.00 to do the job and it usually took 90 minutes to get it done right.

There should be no dust and/or no mess during the process.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Wanna and Captjob for your replies. We found a sweep that meets all the criteria you mentioned Capt, and although I'm not sure of the exact cost yet, they said it'll be less than $150. We were assured there'd be no mess.

Hey Capt, our sweep came & is returning with a chimney cap. How much should I expect to pay for it? Should I assume it varies according to the variety of chimney?

Hi Lisa,

They generally come in standard sizes however the east coast and the west coast masonry chimneys are very different. In California the most common size is an 12 x 24 oval. If I remember correctly most east coast flues are more square. I would charge around $70.00 installed and give the customer a lifetime warranty.

Lowe's carries most standard sizes and they generally sell for $50.00 however, you would then have to do the install. I am not sure what a company would charge to do it today but it should be somewhat close.
Let me know what they are charging for these today, I would be curious.

Thanks, Capt! After our bill for having 2 flues cleaned, I'm ready to pick up a cap at Lowe's and climb up and install it myself!

They are very easy to install.

Good luck!

Thanks again, Capt!
I'm afraid I have two side by side flues and need some cement repair done as well, which I didn't realize until my husband just told me when I showed him the link you were thoughtful enough to send. Hopefully we won't be soaked!
