So I just found out today out of no where that I am moving to New Hampshire for my job, and will be doing it relatively soon so I do not have much time. My work is based out of Manchester, but I was looking to live somewhere with a good of young people, while still being close to Boston. I don't know how or if I can satisfy both of these desires so any help would be appreciated!
a lot of earlier posts have all discussed Portsmouth as a great place for the younger crowd seeking an active social life. So.. some place in between might be good for you. And near Portsmouth is also close to Boston.
I wouldn't worry about Boston. If you are moving to NH quickly because of your job, you must be getting a decent paycheck. That being said, get a rental in or around Manchester so that you can explore the area for the first half a year that you live there. Once you are better acclimated to the area, find a more 'you' place to live.
Many people claim that they want to be close to Boston thinking that it is this great mecca that you must go to for fun and entertainment. The truth is that once those people get settled in, the thought of boston slips to the wayside.
If you're looking for nightlife, I would look around Portsmouth, preferably in Portsmouth. There are a lot of restaurants and cultural events, it gets an influx of young people from UNH in Durham, and it's an hour's drive from Boston. I think it's worth commuting a bit further to Manchester to live there.
Thanks for the responses I will check Portsmouth out- It is my first job out of college and I was supposed to be moving elsewhere when suddenly (2 weeks before moving) it was no longer available ans they offered me here. In this economy, I'm just happy to still have a job!
Portsmouth to Manch is over 45 minutes with no traffic. Unless you are making some really good coin, it is not worth it. I lived in Newmarket (15 minutes west of Portsmouth,) and travelled to Allenstown (just south of Concord) everyday. I was making good money at the time, but ultimately it wasn't worth it. Adding two hours to your day just in driving (plus expenses) becomes a real drag over time. If you have a 9 to 5 job, you'll be leaving around 7 because of traffic. You'll get home around 7 too. Depending on where you are in Portsmouth, the easiest/quickest route may also require a stop through the toll booth both ways. It all adds up. I wouldn't make to commute unless I was taking home over $1200 every week.
Don't forget committing in bad weather. 101 is not fun in the snow.
