Moving to Vermont or New Hampshire has its pros and cons like every other state.
NH is conservative politically, they have no state income tax or sales tax but a high income tax is pretty much the only tax they are responsible to pay.
Vermont is liberal politically, they have state, sales and high property tax.
Jobs seem to be scarce in both states but NH has a close proximity to Boston, MA which has a good job market.
If you are retired... you may have some concerns about NH property tax since it is higher than most states and as a retiree you really are not concerned with the benefit of a no state income tax or even a sales tax. Although I do have to say if you are coming from the tri-state area or California you will see for the same money you will get about double the square footage and about 5 times the amount of land.
