I also commute from Londonderry to downtown Boston every day. There is commercial bus service from the park & ride lots at Exits 2, 4 & 5. It takes about an hour each way in decent weather.
I, for one, could not afford to drive a car into Boston because of the wear and tear on my nerves and the cost of parking.
To get to Longwood (medical center) I suggest getting of the bus at Park Street and taking the "Green Line E" train to Longwood. The reverse is to take the Green Line to Park St and then the Red Line to south station and walking to the bus station.
Thanks Greg the drive was over the first week because my nerves could not take it. I have been driving to Lawrence and taking the Haverhill to North Station and then commuting by Green Line to Brookline Village. I work off campus. Can I really shave time off the commute by the bus? I think I can connect from South Station via the red line, then picking up the green line. It would be great if the bus ride really is only an hour long. What kind of time does it take inbad weather? How far is it to the bus station in walking distance? Thank you for replying.
Try Bostonexpressbus.com for information on schedules, station locations and prices. I am fairly certain that the bus would be faster than the train to Lawrence and driving to New Hampshire. The commuter bus I take (5:30 AM out of Ex4 Londonderry) gets me in the office at 6:30. This bus makes the "commuter loop" and stops at State St and Washington and Park St near Winter (next to the Park St subway complex), Tufts med center and South Station. In warmer weather (anything above 25 deg) I get off at State St and walk to Winter St.
I think the bus would be substantially quicker than the drive to Lawrence and train to Boston. As I said it generally takes from 45 min to an hour. In severe weather and or accidents the ride can take far longer.
Driving in eastern Massachusetts is a learned perversion. I like to drive but not around there.
