I'm not sure everyone would agree with your "truism". I am sure lots of residents' children have had great experiences in public schools. Private schools have their value, but the wealth of services that are available in public schools is usually unsurpassed. Yes, you have to find the right public schools, but a school is a composite of the students in the area who attend, and even more importantly, their families. Responsible, educated parents demand good schools, and can change a school from mediocre to excellent if they are willing to put in the time and effort.

Renting is the smart thing to do. You will probably pay anywhere from $1800 to $2500 for a single family Colonial style house in Londonderry NH. If you consider purchasing a home be aware that Derry NH has an extremely high property tax (2008 tax rate is 25.53/K). That means if your house is assessed for 300K you will pay approx. $7600 per year in property tax. That's $638 per month - net - from your paycheck. In Londonderry NH, (2008 tax rate is 18.48/K), for the same 300K house you will pay about $5500. Better than Derry but still high. Because the property tax in Derry and Londonderry is so HIGH property values tend to remain somewhat stagnet. Also, Londonderry NH has a busy little airport that is getting busier by the day. Much of the NEW construction in Londonderry is right under the flight route. You must be an informed consumer when buying or renting property in Southern NH.
