And having a child will also be an icebreaker. In the nice weather when you take her out to play in a park, or on walks, you can chat up other parents with young kids, maybe arrange playdates... start getting to know other families through your kids. Especially if you ask other parents for suggestions on places to go/things to do/activities.
Roger that, Wanna. Almost without exception, everyone we have met and "kind of" socialize with we've met through our kids being friends with their kids.
In general we have found people to be very open and welcoming. We've been invited to a few get togethers and have had a few BBQs here...I can't say we have a hopping social life, but there are people I know well enough to be the "emergency contact" on my kids' school records and we could host a respectable BBQ. There are <counting...> 5 couples I would call without hesitation and invite over for a BBQ or go to a fair, etc.
