NH House Kills States Rights Resolution (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/N/NH_XGR_STATES_RIGHTS_SOVEREIGNTY_NHOL-?SITE=NHCON&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT - broken link) - Concord Monitor, March 4, 2009.
"The New Hampshire House killed a resolution affirming state sovereignty on Wednesday, dashing the hopes of conservatives who say the federal government should quit meddling in local affairs.

"The House rejected Republican Daniel Itse's resolution by a vote of 216-150. Itse's supporters booed from the gallery after the vote, briefly disrupting the session.

"The resolution said New Hampshire could ignore any federal laws or policies that violate the Constitution. It was nonbinding, so if passed, it would not have carried the force of law."

Just sent this to my 2 state reps that voted against this resolution....

Quote:
Dear Representatives Cushing and Kepner

As a voting member of your Constituency, I felt it my obligation to
inform you of my dismay that you chose to vote against HCR 6: A
Resolution Affirming States’ Rights Based on Jeffersonian Principles.

I am taken aback that any politician could possibly vote against a
bill merely reaffirming the rights already laid out by our Founders in
the United States Constitution. In a period of ever expanding size,
scope, and power of federal government, it is becoming ever more
important to recognize state's rights and return to principles and
ideology that once made this country great.

New Hampshire has a long history of embracing the motto "Live Free or
Die", and the sad irony that such a bill was voted down by the
legislature of this state is not lost on me. While I can only hope
that you use the remaining part of your term to accurately represent
your constituency and choose to vote in a manner more befitting of the
principles this country was founded on, I wish to inform you that you
have permanently lost the support of this voter.

Sincerely,

Joseph Hickey

"the true theory of our Constitution is surely the wisest and best . .
. (for) when all government . . . shall be drawn to Washington as the
centre of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of
one government on another, and will become as . . . oppressive as the
government from which we separated."

Unclear to me that a law affirming "what is" is necessary. Seems a waste of time and resources. For that reason, I'm not sure I mind that it failed...not because I'm against the substance of HR6. We're pretty big on enforcing the laws already on the books, right? Like, don't pass a cell phone nanny law, just enforce the broader existing driver distraction law. Imho, same principle.
