It's our state motto, it's on our license plates, it is oft quoted, yet where did this phrase come from?
Numerous search results attribute it to a toast made by General John Stark in writing to his comrades in arms who were celebrating their thirth second anniversary of The Battle of Bennington The phrase in full was Live Free or Die, Death is not the Worst of Evils.
Though it is still our motto today, some throughout the years have sought to eradicate it , especially from our license plates and one even went so far as to successfully sue to cover up that portion of their plate.
Live free or die. Simple words, words that go beyond the concept of merely physical death. Live free or die, die inside, die to what you ask? Freedom of course. Let us continue to strive to Live as free as possible, for to not do so is surely death to our spirit, as individuals, and as Americans.
Could you please be more specific about what "Freedom" stands for in everyday's life?
IMHO, coming up with an accepted definition for "Personal freedom" will not be that easy.
the surge in patriotism after WWII was responsible for the phrase becoming the state motto in 1945, the same time we adopted the "old man of the mountains" as our symbol.
too many people equate the slogan with the fact that New Hampshire has no sales tax or income tax. Money has become the definition of freedom.
this is a state unlike any other. This state began when people decided they wanted to farm rocks on their hillsides. People will actually 'snort' if you tell them they can't do something...heehee.
Thanks, Crazy Dave. I wondered where that came from. I like the full phrase even better than the shortened version.
Anyone who wants to sue to cover up that part of their license plate should go live in a communist country. Or NY, which would be almost the same.
After driving for too many years with "Empire State" plates, and the lack of any kind of personal freedom that comes with that, I LOVE my NH license plates. They're a symbol to me. I actually took pictures of them and e-mailed them to NY family members to show them off. And yes, I got the moose.

Um, money doesn't just fall on one from the sky proportionally to one's greed, one must work for it. Taxation constitutes part-time slavery.

No man is an island, there really isnt such a thing as true freedom. The license plate motto is outdated maybe that's why the old man fell.NH is really dependent on Mass and the surrounding states for its economy.I dont blame you for wanting real freedom but the the same things we came to America to escape Britain we are now reverting back to.The bipolar economy and political system is broken and until it fixed we will never be truly free. The dysfunctional mob mentality only serves to create more oppression.
being free means different things to different people.
for many freedom means being able to do whatever you want to others without fear of consequences, gangbangers looking for a better life.
for most of us we stopped worshipping the god of freedom and principle and started worshiping the god of the bottom line a long time ago. the god of harmony at any price. the god of mind your own business. that is why 250 air passengers were unable to overcome 4 guys with box cutters on 911.

If you don't like the way things are done in this country, you know you can always head right on back to Britain, right?
Please don't help turn this country into the pathetic socialist utopia Britain is.

So, a rock structure fell due to the motto on a license plate? Moonbat time.... NH is dependent on other states for its economy? Really. What % of those in NH work out of state? Any data to back up that claim?
