We moved here from CA and I totally agree about what it is like there.

NH does have pockets of old money, largely around the Seacoast and Lake Winnipesaukee. For the most part, I think those would primarily be summer residents (houses handed down for generations) and retirees (former summer residents) rather than full-time residents raising families. It's hard to earn a preppy salary here. There's some major preppiness around Exeter, St. Pauls and Holderness since those are extremely preppy schools - but they're also great schools that draw an international population and a lot of culture to their respective towns.

I don't think WASPiness is linked to conservative right wing politics. You will find plenty of WASPy liberals and ultra-conservative blue-collar workers from immigrant backgrounds. And Martha Stewart is of Polish-American descent. Everyone can find a home here. See where you feel comfortable and enjoy. I don't think you will find that "here's what to think" mentality anywhere in this great state.

That is more MA than NH, except for the right wing part. In MA, it is both the left wing and the right wing "old money" people that look down at others...
Actually would not MA be super left wing American often wealthy , old money through strong arm tactics.? Are not the Kennedys the originators of the phrase..Do you know who I am ( which they allowed Kerry to use for a fee )

Have you been listening to Howie Carr again? I am on his show every once in a while, usually in the 6 - 7 hour as "seamus from New hampshire"... He is hilarious...

According to my pest control company "Wasp activity is minimal".

There you have it, officially documented.

Although I guess it only applies to the eaves of my house.

Holy moly the eaves can be terrible! The horse trailer used to be a haven for wasps I used to take wasp spray almost on a daily basis becuse there would be little nests I would knock them out with a broom and run!!

This is my new favorite CD post. You know what the heck is wrong with Martha Stewart I am as much a fan of hers as Sarah Silverman. Of course Sarah is the only resident of NH in that list. Martha is from New Jersey. You might have to get used to shopping at the State run liquor stores that is the weirdest thing about NH. And before you move buy some stock in Tyvek. Ride the waves of profitapossibilities are endless as they say in NH.

Default Is NH waspy?

NH is definitely not waspy. There are small pockets but not noticeable enough for concern. I've lived in southern and central NH. Central being 40 minutes north of Concord. Great people and extremely diverse. I am living in Nova Scotia at present and I would say the people here are similar to those living in central NH. Depending on what you're looking for my preference is the seacoast or Lakes region (west of 93) and southern White Mts. Very diverse from blue collar born in NH to educated transplants. What you'll see is a group of inclusive people (musicians, educators, artists, trustfund babies, carpenters, waiters and waitresses and out of state students. In Concord you'll find lots of lawyers, politicians and therapists. Check out Concord(walk Main Street) and Plymouth (a college town).

It has taken me a few days to think about it and I have to say that I don't think NH can be considered "WASPy" at all. I belong to the Nashua Republican committee and have been involved with Republican politics here for almost 15 years and the only WASPY person I met was when I met John Kerry at a political rally. (He had a small meeting in Nashua during his campaign). Everyone else I have met can be considered down-to-earth and not snobby at all. I have friends who are in all walks of life but I have never been around anyone who is the standoffish, snobby, better-than-you type you associate with the elite White-Anglo-Saxon Protestant stereotype.
Maybe its the hard Winters and the common suffering from them. The "we're all in it together" attitude seems to prevail.
Of course that is not to say that some WASPy types aren't hanging around the golf courses and boating on Lake Winnapasaukee; it's just that they are not part of the NH scene.
