NH is blessed with the highest electric rates in the country. One glitch about this state! But from the numbers you mentioned it sounds comparable to what we pay.

We are currently in the process of moving from Florida up to New Durham New Hampshire. I keep hearing from everyone about how horrible my electric bills are going to be in the winter. The thing no one realizes is how horrible our electric bills are here in the summer running the air conditioning which is just as much as a necessity as the heat is up there. We also have to run it for as many months as the heat is run ours has been on since March and will be on thru September. My electric bill for last month and the month before was $540 for the month. My water bill was $150. How is that for utility bills?
I can't wait to get up there and be able to fire up the wood stoves!
Alison

You should reconsider the Portland Maine area- also Brunswick (home of renowned Bowdoin College and Bath-just to the east. Median price of a home is around 250K.

Also consider Brattleboro Vermont- very diverse, eclectic, bohemian-pop 12,300.
Eastern Connecticut as well- New London/Groton/Stonington/Mystic combined population over 100K on the coast. Diverse, eclectic as well- moderate climate, mediam home price 260K-
Norwich CT(pop. 38,000) as well- about 17 miles north of New London.
Colchester CT 22 miles SE of Hartford-pop 15,000, small town, nice people,
much to offer.

I just picked up the March 2006 copy of New Hampshire magazine, and it features an article on Our Towns, the perfect village/burb for your personality. Portsmouth, Peterborough, Lebanon, Manchester and Concord are featured. The blurbs are short, but there is also a table of helpful stats. If you could put your hands on a copy of this article, it may be helpful. Go to:
http://www.nh.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060504/NHM05/60504001 (broken link)

It might help give you a "flavor" of these towns.

Let me know how else I can help. I've done a lot of my own research on towns in NH, and am currently relocating to the Hanover area (actually East Thetford, VT).

Toyekat:
I live in a 3 story house with oil heat, but with an electric hot water heater, dishwasher and dryer. This past winter our electric bill averaged around $60. We thought it would be much worse. Actually we just paid a bill of $71 but that was due to my bedroom A/C unit, July here was miserable.
We don't run the dishwasher or dryer daily, I would say a couple of times a week, but I still think that our bills were suprisingly affordable. I've never heard that NH has the highest utility bills...hmmmm. Of course, heating is another issue, but oil/gas are going to be high anywhere these days.

Toyekat:
I just noticed you are moving to New Durham, I'm in Alton, just down the road
