I am looking for advise as to which NH banks are the easiest to deal with and have pleanty of branches/atms throughout the state and also New England as well.
I am currently leaning toward TD BankNorth............any advise or cautions?
I had asked about TD bank a while ago. The general gist was that most people were happy with it (it has fantastic hours down here in MD - there's actually a branch right in my town!!) but a couple people had some really bad experiences. My parents own stock in it and have been happy with how it's been run. Seems like it didn't get all that into the risky mortgages I think. They certainly seem to be everywhere, so that makes them convenient!
I am a credit union man, myself. They are generally better all around. It would be nice if a few of these New Hampshire credit unions would just merge so that we could all get the convenience of a bank and the fairness of a credit union at the same time.
I know Bank of America keeps getting slammed by everyone, but I think a lot of that is that it's so big, it's a bigger target (yeah, I probably painted a target on my back with THAT statement). I've been with them for quite a few years, and as long as you keep track of your balances, you don't have to worry about the fees everyone keeps talking about.
Their on-line banking is great, and they have branch offices in just about every state, which was the draw for me - I travel quite a bit. I keep what I need for bills in my checking, and the rest I keep in a Money Market that is tied to it (combined balances get me to the higher interest rates that way)... and I just move money online from the higher interest MM to the checking when I need to - no transfer fees.
If you just need ATMs and you can get into USAA, they waive ALL ATM fees, no matter which ATM you use in the States - that comes in pretty handy. No branch offices for them, though...
This summer, TD Banknorth just put service fees onto all checking accounts that fell below a $100 balance. Before, their small business & personal checking accounts had no service fees. That's my biggest complaint about them.
We had a horrible experience with Bank of America here in NH. We've moved many times over the years so we've tried most of the big banks and I have NEVER experienced incompetent and often openly hostile customer service like that before. The manager who opened our account told us many things about when our deposits would become available, etc that were false. When we called her on it, she basically shrugged. We were lied to again and again. When my husband called the 800 number to try to get to the bottom of it and politely asked for a manager who could help (the phone rep said she couldn't) she called him an ***hole and hung up! It got to be like a bad joke. We closed the acct. as soon as we could. RUN away from B of A!
that's interesting because I just opened an account with TDBank, and they didn't have any minimums or fees. huh.
Guess I'll be stopping by my local branch and doing some complaining come Monday morning!
