According to some (Ok I lost the reference) databases the cost of living in southern NH is about 120% of the national average and somewhat less in the North country. Demand for housing and high property taxes along with a fairly long cold winter drives up prices.

However, the tax burden is not too bad for average incomes. In other words, NH has lower tax burden and higher incomes than many other states, including VT and ME.

It's more expensive than many places I have lived (ND, WA, UT), but to me it's worth it to live in such a freakin awesome place! I can retire anywhere I want, and even live like a king on my military pension in places like Alabama or North Texas, but cost of living isn't everything. What good is an inexpensive location if you hate it? If you have the means, you've got to go where your heart takes you. Wow, that sounded mushy....

I found three interesting sites that might help:

http://www.top50states.com/cost-of-living-by-state.html has an up-to-date chart of the COLI. The index fixes the national average at 100, so every other index amount could be treated as a percentage. Thus, NH @ 117.4 is 17.4% more than the national average, while CA @ 135.1 is 35.1% more. That means I would average a 17.7% reduction in my COL as of the 2nd quarter 2009 stats. Looks nice to me.

Also interesting is http://www.salaryexpert.com/index.cf...ta-by-location in which you can look up the factors by city. Then, you could use Taxes by State to check out a variety of tax factors from each state.
