In theory this sounds proper and acceptable.
In reality, it can be almost impossible to get the bad ones out. And a prudent landlord will have to hire an attorney for around $2,000.00 to get the bad one out - all while never collecting any rent. Then there is the damage after the ones not paying finally move out. Hundreds of dollars more lost in repairs. Then more time lost to repair rental and more costs in advertising all while place is empty during repairs. More income lost.

With two adults working a 40 hr week @ minimum wage in NH ($7.25/hr) have a combined earning of just over 30K per year.

Might be your ambition and lifestyle putting a damper on your future.

Plenty of ways to save money:
Plenty of mobile homes in parks for sale under 10K with monthly rents between 225 / 350 rent, MUCH less than renting an Apt.

Turn off the cable / dish & big screen TV. Drive an older car.

Try taking personal responsibility for your lives instead of blaming others.

Further your education and get a higher paying job.

Still blaming the unfortunate for their misfortune. That is the easy answer.

The truth is you are both right. Every social program has its share of people who need it, and those who game it. The left assumes everyone needs it, the right assumes everyone games it, and us folk in the middle see a mixture.

CarawayDJ you're spot on.

I have no issues with offering a hand up.

When people line up for a handout, that's another issue.

I have a woman friend that lived in Sec 8 housing because her steady job in a drug store did not provide enough money for her and her mentally disturbed son to rent in the "ordinary" market. She had been abandoned by her husband whom she soon after divorced but he did not have any money left after supporting the booze and dope sellers. This woman worked full time and betwen working and taking care of her son did not have time to "go back to school and make yourself more valuable".

The real wealth of a society is measured by how it treats its least fortunate and not by how it worships it’s most wealthy. By this standard our society is very close to failure.

Couldn't agree more. However, what you describe treats the symptoms, not the illness. I'd rather pay such a person a living stipend, free child care, and trade school for 2 years than subsidize the person for life. One approach gets a person to stand on their own 2 feet while the other just keeps them barely surviving all of their life....and needing public assistance all their life.

C-DJ - I agree with your recommendation but what happens after this woman goes to school as suggested and there are no jobs in either her new or her previous occupation. Under your plan her stipend has run out and she is not only out of a job but out of a home as well.

Under the current plan if a person does go to school they lose their benefit unless they keep working. After school she is them hired at a new job with a higher income she may lose the Sec 8 because she is making too much money. Most likely the increased income does not cover the increased housing costs. Life just got harder.

Some people are reluctant to take the chance because they are risking everything. This is not somebody making a choice on their 401 plan. This is somebody trying to keep themselves and their son warm in the winter not just trying to make a slightly higher return on their savings.

I think a lot of people that have never been strapped for cash do not appreciate how hard it is to live at the poverty level or below. You should count your blessings but be aware even you may only be one factory closing away from broke. I suggest walking the walk before you blame others for things literally beyond their control.
