So this is somewhat complicated. I just bought a car in New Hampshire (no sales tax, and as a military member it is my legal state of residence). It is being shipped to California. I take delivery first week of Dec. It will have temp tags on it. I am then driving cross country. Then in January I am moving overseas to Germany as part of a military move.

Soooo... it will cost quite a bit to register the car (BMW 335d). But seems so crazy to pay so much for stateside registration to then move overseas for 4 years during which I will probably sell the car. I hear in CA military members can have the registration fee waived, but then I also heard I will end up paying some sort of very high excise tax instead.

Does anyone have some creative advice on how I can avoid paying high registration fees (in NH) in this circumstance?

thanks,
brian

I don't believe the temp tags tie you to registering in NH, but don't quote me on that. I can't imagine CA being any cheaper than NH to register your car. If you register the car in CA, they will want to see that you paid sales tax when you bought it (which you didn't), otherwise you will have to pay them the sales tax (CA rate) as part of the registration, plus their super high fees. Not sure there's any good way out of this now that you've bought it here. May I ask why you didn't wait until you got to Germany to buy a German car? I assume you bought this through the Armed Forces purchase program? My boss bought a Saab and a Volvo through that program, and I believe BMW has a program too.

I know it's too late for you, but here's the program for BMW and Saab. Looks like it could have saved you some $$$...

I was going to do the military sales program but they don't offer the $4500 ECO Credit that BMW North America offers. So when I ran the numbers, the purchase price was about the same and this way I get to drive the fun new car cross country from CA to NH which will be one amazing road trip before I leave the states for a few years. And it didn't really cost me much extra to have the NH dealer arrange a courtesy delivery to the CA dealer.
