I am 17 yrs old. I am also seven months pregnant. I bought a car from a private sale in NH and on the Bill of sale (which I signed) he sold it to me "as is." Two weeks later I got a diagnostic check on it. I found out the transmission was not functioning properly "low pressure on 1 and 2". (I hav NO clue wat that means, but it is apparent there are transmission issues that are expensive. First of all, is the Bill of Sale legal, considering I am a minor. Second of all, is there anything I can do to get my money back, which was $500.00 paid in full? Now my mom says she can find someone to buy the car, but can I get sued for there being transmission problems and selling it...if I write as is? Should I contact a lawyer because I don't believe that I can take hinm to court?

To my Knowledge you are a minor and the contract is null and Void. unless your guardian was present at the signing. (HOWEVER) This is a big however!!!! If the contract was for a necessity, There is a loophole in the law. That says anyone over the age of 16 can enter into a legally binding contract.( as long as it is a necessity.) Car could fall under this. I am no lawyer and they would know more. But If I am correct. AS IS. is even for you. Double sided sword here though. See if you sell the car even as is, you would be no better than the Person that sold it to you. Except the one that sold it to you might not have known.) AS IS, is common in a private sale. And A lawyer would run more than $500 so either way you got the shaft.

NHYRNUT is probably correct. As is/where is a a common provision in a private sale. You own it. However - For $500 what did you expect? If it runs at all you got a bargain. I suggest you just ignore the warning code, make certain the tranny has the proper amount of oil and clean filters, and just drive the car until it dies. If it lasts 4 months it's a good deal. If you try to sell it and don't tell the buyer about the problem, I suspect the buyer would have a case when they found out about the tranny.

I buy and drive old cars and anything decent would cost around $3,000 +. I bought a '92 Buick Roadmaster Wagon 5 yrs ago with 120 k on the clock for $2,500. It now has over 175K and is going strong.
