Working in Trenton, looking to live where there is: good diversity, urbanish downtown, but near countryside escapes...

Not raising kids so would prefer funky-artsy towns to ultra suburban or "safe"...

Thanks!

Look at Princeton. Kinda funky/artsy yeah. It's safe, but it's got some stuff to do. When I first went to Montclair and explored the surrounding area I said it kinda reminded me a little of Princeton.

Also check out Bordentown City. I drove through there maybe once and it looked like an interesting little place. I have no idea what it has to offer though.

Just don't look in Trenton.

How about Lambertville? Maybe not Montclair exactly but definitely not standard suburbia.

Thanks for ideas! I actually know Princeton well, but looking for something more diverse (in many senses of the term!) Bordentown City looks quite good...and I'll start looking at the other two suggestions next...

Since you want SOUTH JERSEY, how about Cape May?

There IS a Central Jersey, you know.

Well how far are you willing to commute? The only artsy or funky kinda places I can think of relatively close (within a ten mile radius) to Trenton would be Princeton and Bordentown City. If you're willing to drive a little, you can take a look at New Brunswick, which is about 20-25 miles from Trenton if you take Rt 1 all the way. You can also take the train I believe from here to Trenton I'm almost positive. It is of course home to Rutgers University, but there's some diversity around too. Lots of great restaurants and bars with music and stuff. If you're interested in Brunswick let me know if you have any questions, I know it well.

Yeah but if I worked in Trenton I wouldn't make that drive all the way from Cape May!

Most people outside of "central" Jersey don't think it's a real place.

Look into NE Philly. Its not that artsy, but is diverse, urban, and bordered by a large protected park, Penny-Pack. Also close to rural areas in upper bux.

New Hope, PA would be my first choice. It has an easy and scenic drive to Trenton and you don't need to pay to take the little bridge over to NJ. Lambertville is right across the river from it and is also nice, but New Hope is in PA so the taxes should be cheaper than Lambertville.

Princeton is definitely a good choice but will be expensive and will have a bunch of "old money" type of people so I don't think it'll have the complete feel that you're looking for.

I live in Bordentown City. I would not recommend it. The downtown area is dead at all times, other than a couple over priced restaurants and a street fair 2 or 3 times a year. It does have a riverline stop which could be an easy commute to Trenton if you work near the rail. Bordentown City is a nice place to visit for the street fairs or to check out the neighborhood's Halloween decorations, not necessarily live.
