I know this is asking a lot, but would anyone have any information, whatsoever, on apartments in South Jersey under $400? I know that is probably an absurd request, but that's about all we can afford. A very small place is fine, but the one requirement is that it must be in a safe area and accommodate two. Atlantic County is preferable, particularly Galloway, if there is at all an option, but that is completely flexible, just as long as it is affordable and safe.
Also, if I could get any type of information/ideas/suggestions as to some work for cash that is also safe/legal anywhere in South Jersey, as well, it'd be a great help. The situation is critical and there's been no luck so far and little time left to find anything, so any help would be highly appreciated. Thank you very much for your time.

I really think you're going to have to either go through the Housing Authority for low income housing, or go to a boarding house type place (they are not all bad, we have several even here in OC) I can't imagine an apartment under $400 that's not subsidized. Another alternative is to find a place where you can work on premises in exchange for an apartment, such as a building manager or companion for an elderly person, etc.

I would agree with what others said. A friend of mine owns multiple rental properties throughout the Atlantic City and Wildwood area. I shot him an email for you and even the ones that are quadplexes, where you are basically getting a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and small living space in 400 or less square feet are renting at $700+ a month.

Under $400 a month? Not with the property taxes around here. Try Camden. Maybe the rougher parts of Vineland or Millville.
Good luck. If you need safe rental housing for under $400 a month you may need to move to North Carolina.

in 2006 I rented a room in a big abandoned house in trenton for 400, i had access to the kitchen and it was basicly a big empty house with one other guy living there in another room. I found it in the burlington county times or the times. U can also search the courier post, but i'm not sure if people still post much of those room rental ads in the newspapers. Its usually in a column right below or over the apartment ads. There are quite a few houses for sell who can't sell who may want a renter to help pay their bills. Browns Mills nj is one, they're all over though, generally cumberland county is the cheapest.

Just came across this, and not sure you are still looking. There are some apartments in Sicklerville area (Winslow Township) that base your rent according to your income. May be others throughout the state also.
