How would the Denizens of South NJ feel if NYC was handed over to NJ?

Will your taxes go down or up? Will you start following NYC teams? How do you think it will affect the politics, schools, quality of life, crime rates?

Well I've always thought NYC had much more in common with NJ than with NYS, but I don't think it becoming part of the state would be good for SJ. We would get even less attention from Trenton than we do now. As for sports, Philly till I die.

Just for fun, here's a map I made for a different thread a long time ago for a state of Philadelphia and a state of Greater New York:

Taxes - Definitely up. NYC would instantly become our largest Abbott district.
NYC Teams - Hell no. Besides, some of them already play in NJ and I could care less, lol.

Considering that NYC is pretty much its own entity unto itself, I don't know how much we would really be impacted on the other factors. NY State and NYC are kind of looked at as two different entities and I think it would remain that way if NYC merged with NJ. We would basically end up with North Jersey, South Jersey and NYC.

Alright, just to play this game, NYC claims it loses billions of dollars a year to NYS (I think I read $11b somewhere). I wonder if it would be able to keep more of this if it was part of NJ, and going off GOAT use it for the schools so that the rest of our taxes wouldn't go up.

NYC has zero historical ties with South Jersey. This would probably speed up the official North Jersey/South Jersey split.

Why would people in South Jersey give a rat's patoot about NYC teams when Philly has teams? Give me a reason for that.

Yeah, especially since the western part of New York State roots for Buffalo teams.

I liked that map. Greater Philadelphia and Greater New York. Of course, they would then be intrastate for all agricultural purposes. Couldn't even begin to feed themselves.

Why would NYC be ceded to NJ in the first place? Like PP said, it would be trading one awkward relationship for another (upstate NY's apathy for South Jersey's.)

The only benefit remotely possible is better (rail) transit to NYC from South Jersey.

From a national politics perspective, Republicans would like the idea as the rest of New York wouldn't necessarily be solid blue.

If we are merging states, if any in the east, Maryland and Delaware, given Delaware being so small and barely relevant in the national picture, except for Biden right now. Also it's border is mostly with MD. Of course there is tradition and history, but New Castle Co. DE and Cecil Co. MD are one metropolitan region. Central and Southern DE is part of Delmarva with eastern MD. Delaware would be part of a better university system. However, no one in public office would give it up. Once a state always one, as it would rather keep it's 2 senate seats and representation. For DE also lower taxes and history (The First State status).
