Is anyone else experiencing unusally high electrical costs in Mount Laurel this summer? We moved to a single family house in Mount Laurel last September and are now going through our first summer there.

Our electrical costs seem to be increasing exponentially! Our bill went up $200 from May to June and another $300 from June to July. When I called the electric company (PSE&G) they told me there was no problem and that the cost was comparable to what the previous owners paid the year before. I have a really hard time believing this and think there is something wrong. I realize there was a heat wave in July, but we have been taking measures to decrease our useage and save energy. We have switched out 80% of our ligthbulbs to LEDs, got a new Energy Star washer, and are running our pool pump (which is new this season and an energy efficient model) half the time that it was running last year.

I just can't understand the prices that we are getting charged. The electric company told me it was normal for the prices to go up in the summer months because of increase usage, but I have a hard time believing that a $400 increase in 2 months in accurate. Is anyone else experiencing issues and increases like this with PSEG in Mount Laurel?

We had a lot of hot weather this summer in this area.

Your bill is based on your usage. Have you look at the usage over the last 6 months? You can log into PSE&G or look at your current bill.

You have a choice with your electric provider in this area. I personally have Constellation and have been with them for a few years. In my case, Constellation is cheaper than PSE&G

My usage for July was a total of 2309 kWh.

Because I am with Constellation, my usage charge is $246.84 (@ 10.69 cents kWh). If I had kept PSE&G as my electric, then it would be $273.37 (@ 0.118610 cents kWh). There is a delivery charge on top of this (charged by PSE&G) regardless of your provider.

So my suggestion is:

1. Look at your usage.
2. See where you can cut back.
3. Switch electric company to save some money. As you can see, I save $20-$30 a month for not using PSE&G)

BTW, I went back a few months and these were PSE&G rate for the past few months. Rates are cents for kWh

Feb - 0.109144
Mar - 0.109684
Apr - 0.111282
May - 0.113037
Jun - 0.118068
Jul - 0.118610

Also noted that you stated a pool. If you just moved here last September, you didn't really feel the full effect of the cost in running a pool. Pool and hot tub pump uses a lot of electricity.

Try pushing your thermostat up about 5 degrees. Use fans for cooling only in occupied rooms. Ceiling fans work best. Make sure you turn them off when you leave the room.

Pool pump........I hope you are running on 240 volts and not 120 volts. A 240 pump uses half the electricity.

You mentioned a energy efficient washer. What about your dryer ?? your dryer uses a lot more electricity than your washer.

I am familiar with both locations and can assure you that electric costs down here are FAR less than anything l experienced in New Jersey. I have two homes here in Ocala, a 3 bedroom 2 1/2 bath rancher with a pool that l live in and a 3 bedroom 2 bath home which l purchased to renovate and flip for profit which l just completed and sold. Both houses are full electric with no gas and the combined electric bill from the City of Ocala for both last month, including the operation of the pool pump and AC during peak season was $222.....how much did you want to make that bet for ?
