Hi there,
We are thinking about getting a gas fire place built in our living room. There is a perfect area for it...it looks like there was once a fireplace there and was just covered up, but the last owners said there was never one there (and the house was in their family since 1868). But we want to get a gas fireplace built with a basic mantel (maybe a white mantel with some crown molding around it). We already have gas coming into the house.

My questions are:
1) How much would getting this type of fireplace built run us? We would get an estimate but aren't looking to get this done until early spring time.
2) Can one contractor do this? or one to build the fireplace, one to hook up the gas?
3) Does anyone have any recommendations on who to go to for this type of project?

Thank you!

I'm using Chimney's R Us in Sewell but I've also used Stoveworks in Medford. CRU is a bit cheaper IMHO. One contractor should do it all, gas work and installation of the fireplace - not sure about woodworking/mantle stuff though. Installing a gas insert into existing woodburning fireplace is running me about $4300 with permits, if that's helpful to you. My mom had one built from scratch with mantle with no existing structure in Moorestown and it was about $9k with framing, the insert, the gas lines, a custom mantle and all that. A bit on the high side in my opinion but I'm not sure. Good luck

Thanks so much for this info! Helps a great deal. 9K is definitely A LOT more expensive than I thought it would be. I was thinking it would be half of that, max. But maybe it will be less since I already have an existing gas line. When I get a few quotes I'll post back. Thanks!

If you already have a gas line to your house ( heating, stove) the gas company will extend it to where you will have the fireplace for less than $300. If you have no gas lines they will install for heat for no cost. Then you just pay the extension costs.

You are looking at about $5k+ for the rest. The gas line is peanuts compared to the other componants.

Agree with Ms-Christina. Fabricating the surround, plus the gas unit itself, are the main costs. Good luck to you!
