I've known quite a few people of several generations who are/were natives of Gloucester City who are/were wonderful, give you the shirt off their back kind of people. None were racists but I'm sure that there are some in Gloucester City because you can find them any place.
I grew up not too far away from Gloucester, and like Pennsville, as a black person it was understood that you were not welcome there. I don't know how much has changed since then, but even back in the 90's we were warned to avoid the place. I remember the year we played them in football and handled them; they played dirty. Our team was half black. Their team was all white. We fought afterward, but even our coaches told us in the week before the game how dirty they played and didn't get on our case for fighting (even though we didn't start it, someone sucker punched one of our players after the game during the obligatory handshake line). So yeah. I never liked that town.
Well, after two years of researching towns, my spouse and I are moving to Gloucester City, to a beautiful area off Klemm Ave. We have walked through much of GloCity at all times of day and night with zero problems, many, many times. No roving bands of teenagers. No rowdy drunks. Friendly people, beautifully maintained properties. Nice little parks, attractive waterfront, three good restaurants in town. Close proximity to bridges, shopping, all sorts of stuff. Now, are some of the homes in disrepair in the entire city? Yes, plenty. Are there low housing values in the city? Yes. Are there drugs and issues, etc? Well, yeaaahhh! But you know what? I live in Collingswood. Have since 1976, when it was blue collar and rather shabby. Now it's desirable and yuppy and adorable. And I have seen some awful properties that are very poorly kept. Calls to the township for help resulted in nothing. There is crime, drugs, theft. Just like any other town. Gloucester City has great potential and a lot going for it. I think before people comment on a town they should really spend time there. Maybe our move will not be fortuitous. Maybe it will be the start of a beautiful thing. Times change, and so do towns. Collingswood has, and so can Gloucester City.
