Have read previous posts (pros and cons, etc) of Cape May. Have spent a lot of time visiting. Still trying to differentiate areas, in terms of safety of neighborhood, friendliness, benefits/negatives of specific areas. Want to be in walking distance of beach. Considering North Cape May, Cape May Beach......Thoughts?
I live about an hour from Cape May. Have been visiting it for almost 30 years. My favorite part has always been Cape May Point. Not too sure how well CM is doing. The last time I visited it seemed to be a little weak, bloom off the rose so to speak. But others have told me otherwise. Guess it depends on perspective. Taxes in NJ are not good and getting worse. If I were you I would also look at Lewes, DE. You could visit CM and then take the ferry over to Lewes for a day trip. It has been my goal for several years to find a nice ranch house in Delaware.
Just want to add to my above post. Take a look at the beaches in southern Delaware. While I have not yet seen them (other than sitting in my car this past winter) they have quite a reputation. You can even purchase a vehicle pass for surf fishing. Another reason for Delaware.
Just commenting that the last 1000 times I read about a NJ'ian retiring it was always "to get out of this state. its too expensive"
Been a looooonnngggg time since I've seen someone say they want to retire to New Jersey!
Strangely, some people do that. There are plenty of 55+ communities in Southern New Jersey, especially in the Barnegat area. Some are bare bones mobile home parks and others have all amenities like golf, tennis courts, a pool and club house.
I know a guy who lived in Medford and moved to Weymouth when he retired. He bought a small, older ranch home on ten acres. He loves not having to deal with neighbors.
Route 1 into/out of Lewes is torturous in warm months. Unless I planned on staying put during nice weather I couldn't take the traffic day in and day out. Some jersey shore towns have more than one way out of town and locals can find ways to avoid some of the most congested routes.
I don't know about April, but Rt. 1 is pretty busy during the first week of May. I used to visit a friend there who lived in the Rehoboth area about 15 minutes west of all the action. Rt. 1 was very busy even that early in the season. It might be coat and hat weather, but there were plenty of people in town and on the boardwalk, too.
I really like Lewes. I really, really like Lewes. I just don't think that I could put up with all of the Rt. 1 traffic. I wouldn't want to be a senior trying to navigate that mess.
