Can you recommend some good places to hear live local bands (cover or original) is the South Jersey area? Preferably a place where adults 30-50 would feel comfortable?
South Jersey is a big area. You might want to be more specific.
Pour House in Westmont
Shady Katie's in Somerdale
Rack's in Atco
Vera in Cherry Hill
Tir Na Nog in Cherry Hill
Kaminski's in Cherry Hill
PJ Whelihan's in Cherry Hill and Westmont
Villari's in Sicklerville and Laurel Springs
Giumarello's in Westmont
Taproom & Grill in Haddon Twp.
Connie Mac's in Pennsauken
Mulligan's in Oaklyn
R Mac's in Oaklyn
Oaklyn Manor in Oaklyn
Ott's in Berlin, Medford, and Washington Twp.
Brickwall Tavern in Burlington City
Geraghty's in Burlington City
Marlton Tavern in Marlton
Dr. Lou's in Roebling
Adelphia in Deptford
Hotshots in Westville
That's what I'm familiar with in, mostly, Camden County. I can't speak much for other areas.
I'm sure there are more on Burlington and Gloucester, but I'm less familiar with those areas overall, especially those as you get further and further away from central Camden County (I.e. Voorhees, Cherry Hill, The Haddons, Collingswood).
Do some research before you go. Some are more consistent in having live music than others. Don't just expect to show up at any of those bars on a Friday or Saturday night and for them to have a band. Check their website or call them ahead of time to see if they have a band listed.
I have personally been to the Pour House, Rack's, Vera (when it was Top Dog), Tir Na Nog (when it was Dubh Linn Square), Kaminski's (not when a band was playing though), PJ Whelihan's in Medford, Villari's in Sicklerville, Connie Mac's (also not when a band was playing), Ott's in Berlin, and Adelphia (only for dinner though, so also without a band).
Pretty much they all are rock cover bands, and they could be spanning any era from pretty much the late 60's to present day. You could hear some Rolling Stones, some Led Zeppelin, more rockish Michael Jackson songs like "Billie Jean" and "Beat It", some U2, some Green Day, some Lit, some White Stripes, some Killers, etc.
Vera (again, when it was Top Dog) and Villari's would sometimes have bands playing some Top 40 and pop as well. Pour House can also feature an acoustic solo artist or duo, as did PJ Whelihan's in Medford when I went. Tir Na Nog (when it was Dubh Linn Square) also sometimes had traditional Irish folk music or Celtic rock/punk bands (think like Dropkick Murphy's).
Thing is, it's pretty much nearly all covers. If you want to hear original music, you're most likely to find it in the acoustic acts. Actual bands playing original music is definitely hard to come by in South Jersey and is something that is truly lacking. If you want that, your best bet is to go into Philly.
Collingswood porch fest this Saturday. Bands all over town all day long.
