My daughter will be working at Burlington in the near future and we're debating options of where she should live. Basically debating between NJ & PA. I posted something in the PA thread looking for suggestions so thought I'd do the same for NJ.

Basically, my daughter will be working at Burlington corporate a couple days a week and will also have to travel into the fashion district in NYC a day or two a week. So I'm urging her to find something that will make both of those trips fairly easy. She's liked the Manayuck area around Philly, PA but seems silly to me to have a 2 hour train ride into NYC and probably an hour ride to Burlington when you consider traffic. Seems like she could do better than that in Northern NJ but I don't know.

She's a 22 year old so she's looking for an area with more of a modern, trendy, upscale vibe with lots to do in terms of restaurants, entertainment, etc. She's planning to drive to Burlington for her commute there but will be taking train to NYC when she goes there.

She's also wanting a modern, safer type community with good apartment housing to live in...maybe even a gated community but not sure if that will be possible. Basically, I think she's got some high and maybe unreasonable standards lol. I don't think she's thinking about daily travel and commute as much as she should be.

Anyways, just wondering if anybody had any suggestion of cities, areas or maybe even neighborhoods to check out in Northern NJ that would make sense with her commutes that I could point her toward checking out.

It is unrealistic but even harder to gauge because there is no budget mentioned. Doing commutes to those two places mean you will either have two bad commutes or one good commute and one horrible commute.

She is doing more of her commuting to Burlington, so North Jersey is probably not good for her and will also be more expensive. Central Jersey is the way to go and ideally along the Turnpike since that is a necessity to get to Burlington. I think New Brunswick in the good areas around the Rutgers campus and all of the restaurants and nightlife downtown is the best bet. Traffic going south to Burlington isn’t bad since it is reverse flow, and there is a train station to NYC.

Budget probably somewhere around $1,000-$1,500 a month if that helps but would like to be on lower end of that if possible. She'll just be wanting a single bedroom apt.

This is a tough situation, really at two different ends of the spectrum. As much as I love Manayunk, it doesn't make logistical sense to live there with a commute to NYC. If I was 22, and had to be in South Jersey I would probably want to live in the Haddonfield, Collingswood, Cherry Hill area. Have you considered the option of living in Hoboken and commuting to Burlington and only having a 15 minute Path train into NYC? Hoboken is more money (but you wouldn't have the expensive train expense), but just about everyone has a roomates there and probably 50% of the town is under the age of 30. Especially in the fashion industry, many of them live in Hoboken (if not the City) and commute. She would really have a great social life there, and I can't think of a better place to be in your 20's then Hoboken, NJ.

I personally wouldn't recommend New Brunswick. Yes its a college town, but she's not a college student and living off campus is expensive and really not the best place to be.

Agree about New Brunswick. OK if you're going to Rutgers, but not the safest city in NJ by a long stretch. Hadn't thought about Hoboken. The only issue I see there is that it's going to be a long commute to Burlington on the days she has to go there. She'll have to take the NJ Turnpike, which can mean long traffic jams on some mornings, depending on whether there is an accident or not. But yeah, easier commute to NYC.

Agree about Manayunk. Cool place with a great vibe for a young person, but not a good commute for either Burlington or NYC.

With that budget, she's going to have to think hard about getting a roommate.

The traffic on the turnpike wont be bad, going south is actually the reverse commute of everyone else. The only part I have never experienced or know anything about is driving out of Hoboken to the Turnpike in the AM.
