Hello, I was recently offered a job in Camden, NJ.
I've read about it and talked to others about the area and they compare it to my living environment in DC. Not the best, but livable. Preferably since this is post-grad and I will probably be more alone than my times in college, I would want to live somewhere safe. I do have access to a vehicle so commuting to work is not a problem as long as its a reasonable distance.
Max rent I am looking to pay is $1000. (I do not know if that is too low, please advise).
If you could list some areas or apartments/neighborhoods I should check out that would be appreciated!
Check out apartments in Collingswood or Westmont right on the patco train line and only minutes to Camden. You should be able to find a decent apartment in that price range and might be able to walk to the train.

Where in Camden ? Camden again is now the murder capital of the US based upon population.......its not a safe place day or night, especially for a single woman. I'm a man and feel unsafe when I have to travel through Camden for any reason.
I don't understand - are you a grad student at Rutgers-Camden or have you recently graduated and you've landed a full-time gig that happens to be in Camden? I'm asking because, Campbells, for instance, is not within walking distance of the train.
Assuming that you're working somewhere within a few blocks of the train station then Collingswood or Westmont are good so is downtown Haddonfield. If you're having a hard time finding a place there are a few apartment complexes within walking distance of the Ashland Station on the PATCO line.
If you can, try and find something near the Speedline and take that into Camden if it's near where you work. Also, there's Gloucester which is definitely a lot better than Camden, and is very close.
Pennsauken, Cherry Hill, Collingswood, Westmont and even Merchantville are all nearby and would work for you. And agree with folks that suggest living on PATCO line if you can walk to work from the 2 camden stops.
