Obviously NJ has MUCH more pressing issues. But does the marketing department? There is a division in Trenton dedicated to marketing, promoting tourism, and press relations.

Who the heck was the bubblehead(s) who supported the current license plate design? It has to take the cake for the blandest one in the US. Off-white, with black letters? Really? Why? And why shift to that, from the blue one in the 80's? At least the blue, although boring, had color.

As a marketing/advertising professional, I can't wrap my head around why the state of NJ doesn't do some "self promoting" by redesigning a nice NJ license plate that highlights some of NJ's assets -- mountains, farms, or the coast.

At the very least -- add some COLOR to it! NJ is one of the most colorful states in the US, with tons of colorful characters ... why the beige/black???

From what I understand, these plates were crafted for the purposes of various levels of law enforcement: state and local police agencies wanted a license plate that is easy to identify and decipher. The desire for law enforcement to be better able to identify the plate even went so far as to make the plate only six alphanumeric characters. I don't know how many remember, but during the 90s, when the plate went back from blue to biege, there were originally 7 characters on the plate. State police urged it back to six, saying seven was too many for troopers to recall. For all I know, there might be a few of those 7 character plates out there still. My dad's was one of them, and about a year or so later, they were taken down one. But I have digressed. The purpose of those plates remain so the law can identify potential law breakers more effectively.

It's called straw and it has been the design for about ten years. Where you been? It beats the blue old replaced. The colors were picked for visibility.

Six was retained because the databases at the time would not accept seven characters in the fields. A major and expensive overhaul would have been required. Since that time the database software was changed to a graphic user interface which may accept seven characters.

i thought it was buff and black, not straw.

we're now in "Z" in the plates, what's the new config going to be? e.g. plates are re ZRD-56T . .. what happens after Z?

LOL, just because I posted this topic now, doesn't mean I JUST realized the plate has been beige for many years, sheesh.

But are we really the only state that needs this extraordinary level of readability?

It's just a really, really bland representation of our state -- which is a state that many/most outsiders already view as really, really bland.

I like the blue ones better too. I wish I had gotten a blue plate, I remember when they changed them around 1992 ish.

Look at what the other states are doing now with all their fancy plates. Why don't we get them?

Well Tommy, if it's any consolation to you, I try to spread the good cheer about the Garden State to those here in the desert, whenever I get the opportunity to! A number of people I work with here still think its part of New York City.

meh. i'm not a fan of our plates, but in general i'm not a huge fan of colorful, over the top plates either. KY had one with a rainbow'ish background with a smiley face for a sun - barf. I'm in the minority but I love the DE throwback license plate - black with white lettering and only a few numbers.

if they changed the colors but made it subdued I'd be ok with it - like California's.

BTW - I hate NY's new "retro" plates, but loved the old pre 1986 ones. Go figure.
