Burn Your MetroCard -- Credit Cards to Take Over for Subways, Buses | NBC New York

I heard about this system and wanted to know how everyone felt about it. Port Authority, NJT, and MTA are all trying out a new unified payment system for transportation in the metro area. The system is going to credit/debit cards. The trail is running now and currently using the Master Card tap and go system. I have mixed feelings about this. I think it is a good idea to have a unified payment option, but I don't think it is ever a good idea to involve credit card companies in anything. How secure can this be? Is there a chance to get charged more than once? How are they going to do monthly passes and discounts? What do you all think? I hope there isn't already a thread on this.

That's what I'm most interested in finding out about. I have the PATH Smartlink card. My monthly unlimited pass is automatically deducted from my checking acct. I never have to give it a thought.

they've had this for a while, they tested it at certain stations..

i used to come off gramercy stop 4/5/6 and citicard users were given a little circular tiny scanner and theyd scan and swipe to go thru the turnstyles.. no flimsy metrocards.. they were so cool

that was about 3 years ago, cool to see it go system wide

Credit Card companies must conform the the PCI security standards which are much better than the security at any of the transit agencies.
