I am looking to move further north as my job has relocated to Jersey City. I have heard a lot of great things about Chatham (family friendly, easy commute via train, great downtown, great schools) but don't know the difference between Chatham and Chatham Boro. I am a newly single mom and have a child who will be in the 4th grade next year so I want a neighborhood friendly to children. I'm also looking at Westfield.
Any advice someone can provide would be greatly helpful. I am looking in the $550 to $700K range.
When I lived in Chatham Township, there was definitely an elitist attitude toward the Boro. The Boro has an actual downtown, streetlights, and sidewalks, while my street in the Township had no sidewalks or lights, and street parking was illegal. The lots in the Boro are much, much smaller and the homes are often both cheaper and older.
Since the schools are combined, that is no longer an issue.
The township has been viewed as more "elite" if you will vs the boro. Honestly, I don't think anyone really cares if they have friends in the boro or township. I don't think you will feel any sort of difference if you choose the boro. The price range is high in the township but they have condos that are in the 300 and up range, some are quite nice.
Just some more info you should have there is a 3-5 year wait for a parking permit at westfield
