Seaside or Point Pleasant. Pt. is more family younger kids for the most part. Teenagers and young adults I would go for Seaside.

If you have young kids I would highly recommend making the drive to Ocean City. Its waay down in cape may county, but probably the most family oriented boardwalk on the jersey shore.
Can I gripe something about Ocean City NJ (as a childless male)?

They were absolute nazis about how far out I could swim. I seriously went out to belly-level water and the guy blew the whistle, and I had to come in. Very small side-to-side boundaries too. For that reason, I consider it my worst beach experience in NJ. For (small) children that's obviously not an issue, and it certainly was clean and had a pleasant boardwalk.

^ I agree. For swimming and boarding OC is probably the worst beach in NJ for the reasons you stated. But for the "shore town experience" on the boardwalk and downtown it's pretty great. We're having a family reunion down there during 4th of July week and can't wait!

I generally prefer to get on the beach late (after 4pm). The lifeguards are leaving, the sun isn't as intense, the kids are gone, badge checkers are gone, and you can enjoy yourself.
