The wires are from the 1930s and Congress doesn't seem to think that the corridor needs properly funding. Amtrak has tried to get this corridor upgraded since the mid 80s with very little luck. CT is replacing all there wires and is 70% done , NJT did replace and upgrade all the wires on the lines it owns like Morristown , North Jersey Coast line and Montclair-Boonton line from 1985-2002. The Gladstone is currently getting its signature wooden poles replaced after 70 years in service. You think Congress or Washington would care about a major artery of a important part of the US but they don't. Instead trying to sell it to a private company which is a bad idea and will never happen...
Railguru - what is the best way to downtown Manhattan from Old Bridge, NJ - no buses and no trains from Matawan or South Amboy??
There trains in both towns , South Amboy has its station in Downtown and Matawans station is near the Parkway. You would take the train from either town to Newark Penn station...then switch to the PATH for lower Manhattan.

Something along the Northeast Corridor Line. If you can find something nice in New Brunswick, that might work. Or else, you can try Linden or Rahway, though they are sort of industrial in nature.
