As a teacher I can tell you that you need to really know your child. I do feel many summer 5s (july - sept babies) would benefit by staying home another year. It isn't about getting ahead. That is the WRONG reason. It is because your child may not have the maturity, he/she may not be emotionally and socially ready. The academics will come, that is not an issue.
I have a July baby. He has many developmental delays, therefore, I already know he will benefit from being home, even though his twin will probably be ready. They will wait until they are both mature enough, and emotionally ready.
Those early years are too crucial to send them just because of a magic cut off date. Get to know your child and know if they are truly ready or not.
I do know of parents who do this to get the upper edge and I do think that is a sick way of thinking.
If your child is ready, mature enough, socially and emotionally ready...send them. If you have doubts, don't. Do it for your child's needs.
One more thing. I also know parents who send their kids, knowing they aren't ready, but it is seen as "free daycare." That is just as troublesome as a parent who wants their child oldest for the glory of being top in their class
