Hi,

I have a temporary work assignment in Woodcliff Lake starting in about a month. Because this is basically a work trip, there will be no cost to me. My housing budget is around 1500/month. I plan on having a car to use for commuting. Ideal spot would be somewhere along the PATH mainline so I could go into NYC anytime. I'm from Chicago so I prefer urban to suburban. My girlfriend may come with and we have no kids. Basically I'm thinking of either Newark or Jersey City.

Before everyone tells me Newark is hell on Earth, is it really that bad? Lots of places in Chicago are drug infested and full of violence. But I would still live there and feel reasonably safe walking around at night. In other words I'm used to looking over my shoulder. But most important to us is the ability to use the PATH to get into Manhattan with ease.

On that note, were I to drive to Woodcliff Lake every morning around 7 how difficult is it to get out of the Jersery City/Hoboken area in the morning? Would driving from Newark be considerably easier?

Also, I prefer to use the car for commuting north because the Passiac Valley Line does not have its first northbound train until 9:22am, plus the train station in Woodcliff is three miles from my work location. One mile I could walk every morning, but three miles takes too long.

Of course I welcome alternative suggestions such as looking for an apartment farther north and using a park/ride option to reach the city. Thank you for your input!

Your Reversing commuting so they'll be less trains. Once you get up to WoodCliff lake you need a shuttle to your work place which i'm assuming is near the GSP. Look around Historic Downtown & Journal SQ area in JC. You can live in the Ironbound section of Newark which is the safest. No its not like Chicago , the crime rate in Newark is going down. You might find Newark easier to commute form since you would only need to go 3 miles west form the Ironbound and then take the Parkway to probably within a block of your work place. If your form Chicago i think you'll be able to handle Newark.

From Newark you could also drive right up the NJ 21 Freeway to where it merges near US 46, I-80, GSP, NJ 17, etc. There's even a way to beat the GSP toll that's not too bad. I've never been to Chicago but wondering, maybe suggesting you zoom around on your PC, hate to suggest anything from evil racist censor Google, but Google Earth may give you some feel of the areas you're interested in.

how is google evil and racist? I got to hear this one.

But to answer your question, i would recommend Jersey City. There is simply a lot more to offer. Its pretty much the ideal place to live if you are only here for 6 months and want to experience everything NYC has to offer

Forget NJ. Washington Heights. Upper Manhattan. Easy reverse commute by car across GWB to Woodcliff Lake. Subway trains to downtown Manhattan at all times. The hard part would be finding a place to park the car.

Or you can take the bus from the GWB Bus Terminal.

The reason most people don't know is because that information was censored by the evil demon racist censor organization Google. A friend of mine explained they are not there to promote freedom of speech or freedom of information but to make money.
One blatant example is they outright deleted certain internet newsgroups which still exist freely and actively on the internet outside of Google Groups on the usenet, where Google wiped them out from their listings.

Anyway don't want to go too far off topic, as the discussion of Google being a no good commie censor is another topic, but definitely true.

This is the NJ Forum not the NYC forum. Its harder to reverse commute out of Manhattan + it costs more to live in Manhattan.

I like the sound of this idea. Are you sure going west over the GWB in the morning is not too congested?
