Keansburg? It has a small amusement park/boardwalk/beach, and it's farthest north as far as the Jersey shore is concerned, therefore, closest to Florham Park. I think it will still take more than "less than an hour" though.
Also, it's not the nicest town...at least it wasn't when I went there once in the late 90s.
Not too familiar with that area. I think Laurence Harbor has a boardwalk and park and Cliffwood Beach only has a park? Neither have a traditional boardwalk + amusements. I guess it depends on your kids. If they're expecting rides and arcades, they might be disappointed.
There's nothing under an hour in the summer. Just put that out of your mind. Also, "non-commercial" and "arcade" do not gel. I suppose you could go to Pt. Pleasant for the boardwalk and arcade, and go to the beach in the northern part of the town near Manasquan Inlet where there is just a burger joint and small bar on the boardwalk.
How far is Jenkinsons?
Jenkinson's is really very commercial (and expensive, IMHO) and the beach is COST! /gasp
But it's got great arcades.
And you're kidding yourself if you think you can get anywhere down the shore in less than an hour. Especially with the way traffic has been lately.
Any thoughts on Laurence Harbor or Cliffwood beach?
I'd say no, because Laurence Harbor you can't swim on part of the beach, because of lead contamination. Also, the area seems more like a beach to go fishing on than swimming, because the water seems a little scuzzy.
I was only at Point Pleasant once, but it didn't really seem that commercial (compared to places like Wildwood, Seaside, OC, etc.) and had a decent boardwalk with arcade. That'd probably be the closest, although it'd be over an hour.

Pt. Pleasant Beach has a much smaller commercial area of its boardwalk than Seaside, OC and Wildwood. The commercial arcades, restaurants, nightclub and aquarium are spread over probably 10-15 blocks. The rest of the boardwalk just has houses lining it on one side and the beach on the other.

I haven't been there, but I have always heard great things about Point Pleasant (other than it being a little rocky)
