Looking for some opinions on here.

So my wife and I currently live in a 3 bedroom ranch. We love the home, but with one clild now in our life and more to come, we are trying to rethink our home from a new perspective.

One of the ideas we came up with is to move our master bedroom to the basement and make the current master bedroom a rec room/mudroom (it is right next to the garage). Our current master bedroom is large, but only has two small closets and no bathroom.

The entire basement would essentially become a master suite with a full bath, large walk in closet, and sitting room with woodstove, all of which is currently in place (except the closet).

Now, before we get up in arms as to living in "the basement," some clarification would help. The "basement" I am talking about is a walkout basement that has three large windows and a pair of sliding glass doors along one wall opening out on a patio overlooking a small lake.

While I am sure basement master suites are unusual in NJ, I was wondering if, given the unique circumstances of this basement, if it might be work?

If you plan on living there a long time, go for it, but before you sell convert the rec room back to a bedroom, I think otherwise it would be a sales detriment.

Definitely. Any work we do on the basement would be easily switchable if we were to sell to give the future owner as many options as possible. Since the basement already has a bathroom and small bedroom (where we would put the closet), we would have to do very little to make it a special place. It even has exposed stone walls to give it some character!

+1. As Tahiti said, go for it.

The ONLY problem I could see if if/when you go to sell. So, if your not selling any time soon, Its your house, do as you will.

will it bother you to have your children above you on the first floor while you sleep

i would want my children on the same level or above me i think.

sounds like a nice basement though.

We thought about that and while it may bother us a little bit, we do have a security system that is all set up with sensors, etc. from a safety perspective.

sounds like a good move given the unique scenario. only way i wouldn't do it is if there wasn't enough lighting in the basement, which your unique situation sounds like that's not the case. go for it!

i'd be a little caught up on my children sleeping above me, on the main floor, but i don't think it matters it just sounds odd.
