In California they had service where you could subscribe to a farm fresh veggie delivery for a fee. They would deliver a bag of whatever was fresh at the time. Does anyone know if a service like this in northern NJ?

I don't know of farms that deliver to your home.

But you can go to farmers markets which are every weekend Saturday and Sunday just about everywhere - check out the Jersey fresh website for details.

or you can Join a CSA - these are farms which sell "shares" of their farm. rather than selling their crops at market they sell a set number of shares and the share holders are entitled to that slice of the farm each week of the season. They do not deliver to your house but will drop off at convenient locations. It is late in the season for this.. but check out:

Bear Swamp Farm CSA - Welcome!

i am sure there are other CSAs in NNJ not listed here... i would pick the one closest to your home that delivers closest to you and is organic or CNG (certified naturally grown).

Finally what you could also do is plant your own garden and share with neighbors.
we have been giving away tomatoes this summer and hope to expand next year. I just made 6 jars worth of Pasta sauce from our own tomatoes.

we lost a lot of crops due to some crazy groundhogs but will site plan better next time.

we only used about 500 sq ft (figure 50 ft long by 5 feet deep or so) and have all the basil and tomatoes we could want. Potatoes are in the ground and should yield about 20 pounds or so? A few carrots. Plenty of bell and japaleno peppers, watermelon, broccolli (spelling) got eaten. We had some green beans also. Zucchini are generally very very easy to grow in NJ but we were too lazy about it this year. It is great fun but a lot of work!!! But I would rather be picking organic veggies than mowing the lawn.

where in northern nj are you?

Yes there are lots of them. What town are you in...at lot of them are town specific. I know of one in Madison. Google "organic co-op and your town" and see if anything comes up.

Tell us more about those places in CA that deliver. How does it work?

It's a good idea for people who are looking for a paycheck in this economy. Someone could go to farms that are a little too far from a particular area that doesn't have farms, pick everything up that's ordered from customers, and charge a fee for the service. If you have enough customers from one town, you can offer a good price because the gas costs will be spread over all of them.

If you live in places like I do, there's usually farm stands you can stop at.
