Does anyone find it slightly unusual the prices they charge at the Jersey shore in the summer? Such as the 9% sales tax and the like 15% extra hotel taxes on top of the already inflated prices and minimum night stays etc etc?
Also have you experienced this in other areas up along the east(or west?)coasts?

It's just not the Jersye Shore, it's anywhere where there is a huge influx of tourists.
Unfortuneately it's not that unusual. The sales tax rate is 7% in NJ. The additional 2% that is charged goes toward tourism. This tax has been in effect for a few years now.
You can thank the state of NJ and Corzine for adding the hotel tax. Hawaii has been charging 11.21% for quite a few years. They call it the Paradise Tax, certainly can't use that wording for the Jersey shore.

was this corzine? i've got to imagine the common hotel tax has been around for a long time. NYC charges upwards of 20%!!!
I will truely be amazed when people get their facts straight when it comes to NJ. Many are quick to quote things that are not fact, but just seem to have to get their shot in. The tax was not created by Corzine. I'm not a Corzine fan but it was not his doing. The legislation has been in effect for quite a few years. The fee is not the same in all cities. Newark, Jersey City, Atlantic City, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and North Wildwood have set fees of different rates. I believe the remainder of the state is now at 5% (please correct me if I'm wrong). When the fee was enacted in Cape May County is was put in to fund the Wildwood Convention Center and the Greater Wildwood Tourism Authority. The tax in Cape May County is on rooms, food and amusements.
