I get to Wall Street in an hour from Montclair. I take an 8:05 train gets into Hoboken at 8:30. Take an 8:39 Ferry and I am at pier 11 at 8:54. It can be done
Do you sleep in the station and work in the pier ?
I have friends who did a montclair to lower Manhattan commute. It was about 75 minutes. I don't know which train you take but I just checked and the rush hour train from Glen Ridge is 30 minutes.
One of the most effective methods to speed up your commute is to exaggerate! Those who don't use this method (which works well when posting to forums but not so well when actually commuting) often have very fast "internet" commutes.

You could also take the ferry from Atlantic Highlands directly to Wall St. That's usually under an hour. The towns around there should have something in your price range.
The ferry is about 45 minutes from Belford to lower Manhattan. However, bear in mind that the monthly ticket is $635.
Just a heads up -- none of the NJ suburbs will give you an end to end commute of under one hour, but you should be able to get close to that if you stick with towns where the train ride to Hoboken is no more than 40 minutes (though more like 30 minutes is better).
I would suggest starting with Montclair, Summit and Ridgewood.
I commuted from Ridgewood for years. Complete commute was an hour and ten minutes from the house to the World Trade Center PATH station. Just as a reference point.

Can you elaborate on the commute that you took? I work out from the WTC PATH and would love to move to the Bergen area. The supposedly long commute is the only thing discouraging me.

Commute routes varies depending on which town in North NJ you live in. If you happen to live in towns that have Path, you just hop on Path (ie: Hoboken, Jersey City, Newark) and goto NYC.
If you don't then you use another service like bus, ferry, light rail, and train then transfer to Path. Please note this is additional monthly you'll need to pay separately.
Fastest commute to WTC Path while living in North NJ is Hoboken and that'd be about 20 min from station to station.
Easy way to do your research is to search on NJ transit website and use the trip planner to find out.

NJ Transit to Hoboken (45min), then Hoboken to WTC (10min). Transfer will vary depending on time of day, maybe around 10 minutes. That gets you up to 65min plus walking time. You can shave off 5 minutes or so by taking an express from Ridgewood. So around 70min is possible if you live close to Ridgewood station and WTC PATH, especially if you take an express train.
