I used to commute from Walnut St. to Midtown everyday. By train it was about 45 minutes (plus a healthy walk on either side). The train always sat on the tracks between Newark and Secaucus for 5-10 minutes because of train congestion. It happened every day, but the time was never built into the schedule for those rush hour trains.
After a few months I switched to the bus. It still wasn't a great commute, but it worked better for me than the train. Buses ran more frequently and there was a stop in front of my building.
On weekends I would either drive into the city, or to Harrison to catch PATH.
Does anyone else have any insight as to which is better from Montclair the bus or train? Also is the posted train times for Decmp accurate even at rush hour? And lastly does anyone know if the buses go anywhere besides port authority (downtown, midtown, etc).
I think this link would be more helpful to the OP. Do Check it once in a while since these things change. I was commuting a couple of years ago (the job contract mandated my hours to be 9-5 exactly) . So the direct like (no transfer) 8:07 departure time got me to my office a few minutes before 9.
The schedule lists 35 min express, so add 10-15 min to that (it takes time to leave the train (since every-one is leaving and get out of the Pen Station)
They were talking about closing the train tunnel for repairs for a couple of years That would be funny, would it not ? Winter is when da most delays occur, some bridge freezes or something like that, so they re-rout through Hoboken and then you have to take the path to midtown. sometimes there is train traffic. Still, using trains one is on time more often then using buss

I don't live in Montclair but I was not impressed with buses in Bergan county. In the evening, past seven from Port Authority the buses run reasonably close on time. Unless the get stuck in Manhattan. In the morning, it is a disaster. They never arrive on time at my stop, they get stuck both on turnpike, in the tunnel and the approaches to Port Authority Bus Terminal. There are just too many buses. The state needs more train service.
There doesn't even need to be a weather event. So often trains just break down or there is some type of track, signal, or electrical problem that causes a delay.
