In town of Rutherford, landlord is claiming taxes went up $6000 from 2006 to 2007 (2-family house) to justify a 17% increase in rent on a 1 BR apartment. Does that sound right? I know there was a reassessment done recently but $6,000? A 75% increase?? I find it extremely hard to believe.
I don't see tax data for 2007 available yet online, is that October when it comes out? I will likely request to see evidence of this increase before resigning lease, although I'm sure they are not required to do so.
Seriously, if Rutherford was recently reassessed, it's possible that they did increase that much- especially if the house was undervalued prior to the assessment. While I don't think it would be unreasonable for you to ask to see the tax bills for the two years, there's nothing saying that the landlord has to show them to you- you always have the option of moving out. Of course, since he used the taxes as the excuse for the increase, one would think he'd be OK with showing the bills to you.
