Depends on the business, and what kind of clientele your business needs. Anything highend is likely to do poorly at the moment, unless the town turns itself around. Look at the stores that are currently in the area you're considering, and that should give you a general idea of the type of clientele you can expect- no one is making Newark a "shopping destination" yet- especially for one store.

know your clientele. if you think you can appeal to the demographic and have a good biz plan in place and take necessary safety precautions, good luck!

i have a good friend who owns a mortgage biz in newark, he mainly services the Portuguese community (his partner was port. and spoke fluently), and does really, REALLY well.
