North Edison schools are comparible to Metuchen schools. We chose Metuchen.
In one of the recent "rankings" of NJ High Schools Metuchen HS was ranked the 2nd highest of the Middlesex schools at #54 (Highland Park HS was 1st at #37). The third highest in Middlesex County was J.P. Stevens (in Edison) at #65. The difference between all three is pretty nominal at most - except for bragging rights. [

But it is years until your child goes to High School, as well as my own, so:
One of the biggest reasons we moved to Metuchen (recently) was because we liked what we heard we saw & heard when we visited the schools & talked to the principals/vice principals (highly recommended). The schools in Metuchen also have a lot of great extracurricular activities - and is hooked into the Y for before & after-care. So far, the teachers seem to very good & the kids are both enjoying themselves and learning something at the same time. Also, we happen to prefer living in Metuchen over Edison -- all for purely subjective reasons - the feel of the town itself, a nice downtown, proximity to commuting, etc. (that is something you are going to have to decide for yourself by visiting each town, walk & drive around & talk to the people) Your own criteria might be completely different & you need to choose the one that is best for you and your family.
Good luck!
