it's very safe, especially compared to the rest of jersey city. i've heard about a few minor incidents, but nothing serious. there are many families with young children.
jsq is about a 10 minute drive (with no traffic). there is a shuttle service that runs from inside the community to the path station on weekdays. if the timing works for you, it may be a viable alternative to driving and parking.
to get to the turnpike, take 440N to 1/9 truck to the turnpike. it's approximately 2.5 miles and takes 7-10 minutes in the morning unless there's an accident or the drawbridge is up. another option is 440S to the turnpike extension, but imo going north is usually the better option.
