I don't put much stock in online reviews of doctors either. Most are from embittered people who were expecting a cure all or they were given a diagnosis they didn't want to hear or believe.
Most of the dermatologists in the NY-NJ area are going to be overwhelmed with patients referred for possible cancer diagnoses, skin lesions, and scaling. At the same time, they are also scheduling excisions and biopsies. As such, the over-crowding is not going to be confined to just a few offices. It will be all over. The doctor I go to,
Barbar Rao, is located in Manhattan, but has limited hours as part of University Doctors Group in Somerset. No matter the time I schedule, morning or afternoon, his Somerset office is packed with patients of all ages.
FWIW, I'm no doctor and do not presume to have any experience in diagnosis. However, I had a similar condition when I was younger. It can best be described as an irritation of the hair follicle by bacteria, but sometimes fungus. The carrier is usually clothing of some type like hats, collars, or scarves that has been intermingled with clothes from someone else. (It's one reason I hate checking my coat during the winter.)
I agree with Mike J that a switch to Neutrogena clear shampoo would be helpful. If, in fact, it is the bacterial version of folliculitis, an oral medicine may be prescribed. For the fungal version, there is usually a cream or salve that can be prescribed.
Good luck!
