so if that's true, why would anyone miss police or fire departments?

"The mayor's office says that the cuts will not affect public safety."

Really?? We'll see how that works out. Pretty much everyone for themselves at this point.

Why don't the citizens themselves work on that? Are they personally lacking in something? Don't they elect their local leaders? What's a governor supposed to do?

My township doesn't need a governor to manage our needs.

If fact, that's the last thing I want.

there is really nothing anyone can do at this point. The city is more or less doomed. The population is rapidly being reduced.

I would work on condemning/knocking down the abandoned buildings

If Detroit can begin to have a upswing then theres hope Camden. Detroit is demolishing all the Abandoned buildings and focusing on jobs and crime.....Camden should follow them.....it seems to be working..

"Detroit" and "working" don't really go together. If anything Detrot's another example of how not to negoiate union contracts. Just like us in NJ.

"A report from the Detroit News Monday suggested that without government aid, the city of Detroit will be forced to close down nearly half of the city’s public schools in the next two years. Additionally, the paper warns that average high school class sizes will swell to 62 students by the following year...."

"...As students suffer amidst increasing classroom sizes and declining school choices, the district’s teachers stand to earn higher salaries. The city’s contract with the Detroit Federation of Teachers requires payments for teachers whose class sizes exceed specified maximums. So while Bobb demands increased class sizes to save the district money, the district is simultaneously estimating the move will create $10 million in additional costs to pay teachers’ oversize class pay over the next four years alone......

they wouldnt. they would just have to adjust. that could mean replacing existing departments with private contractors and/or covering the needs within the community.

i have a better idea. in those towns, they should cut taxes so they dont have excess funds. then people like yourself who like to give away peoples hard earned money can donate your own money to help poor towns.

Camden Police Union Rejects Concessions
CAMDEN, N.J. - The heads of Camden's fire and police unions will meet Thursday to try and come up with a plan to bring some laid off firefighters and officers back.
On Wednesday, the police union rejected a plan by the city's mayor to save about 100 jobs.
The vote was 300 to one against the measure. The deal would have reinstated officers in exchange for giving them unpaid furlough days.
