This is all I want to write on this issue, it makes me sick to see how much people are getting away with and NOTHING seems to get done about it. This is not the first time this has happened and it won't be the last either, it will only get worse, and for those parents who think "Thats not going to happen to my kid" well don't be all suprized if it is your kid one day.
That's ridiculous, people still try to act like people under 18 are all innocent and what not and know nothing.

Teens as low as 13 are drinking and having sex on a normal basis, nothing will stop it, as it's a product of the times we live in. I also can't agree that no one under 18 shouldn't have a phone if it texts and sends pictures, that's kinda out there, again, the times we live in.

Anybody any age should have a phone if necessary, who cares what it does, it's the parents job to watch over their kids, not simply blame television, movies, society, the phones themselves.

I didn't say they shouldn't have "A" phone just not one that has a camera phone or one that does text.

No body said everyone under 18 is "all innocent" but they are naive. Sure the kids know what they are doing when they send a picture of boobs to a classmate, what they don't understand fully are the consequences of this action.

Back in the day if you took a nude picture there was one maybe two copies, it took a while to circulate and would like be confiscated before too much damage was done. Once it's taken away it's gone forever. NOW a girl sends a nude picture to her boyfriend/crush and in 30 seconds he can forward it to his entire phone book, in 30 more seconds each of those kids can forward it to their entire phonebook. By lunch time the entire school has seen it and there are countless copies on the web, when the girl goes home she gets to see a bunch of nasty remarks about her on facebook from the "safety" of her own living room and has to live forever knowing that picture can resurface at any moment.

There are laws to protect minors for a reason. No one ever said that no teens under 21 have never tasted alcohol or anyone under 18 has never smoked but that doesn't mean we should just open the flood gates and give them free reign over these things. There has to be laws in place to discourage these activities and make them less accesible to the young, naive and "invincible".

So you would rather your daughter produce child porn with limitless possibilities for reproduction than to participate in a little one on one sexual experimentation???

sure, you can prosecute an adult that posses said pictures and have them register as a sex offender but you cannot do anything about consensual sex between two minors. Also sexual experimentation can lead to pregnancy and or std's. So again i would much rather have a innocent pic floating around that anyone of age would be a fool to posses than her sexually experimenting with an adult or minor, hopefully it wont even come to that decision.

An innocent picture? are you kidding? what's innocent about a naked under age girl, you say who would be a fool to posses such a picture? Have you ever got naked female pix on your phone? do you know how old these girls are that YOUR looking at before YOU delete them? Of course you don't! So don't say it's an innocent pic!! you yourself have no idea the ages of the people your looking at, you know as well as everyone else sometimes you can't tell the age of some people... does that make it right? NO!

Innocent picture?!?! I can see it now "Not guilty your honor, the defendant had nothing more than a hard drive full of INNOCENT pictures of underage nude girls. There was no physical contact so obviously there was no victim and no crime"

I'm very sorry to tell you but if a girl is at the point in her life where she is sending nude pictures of herself to others actual sexual activity is not too far off if it has not already happened. There is nothing innocent about it. And while if I had a 6th grade daughter I would hope that there is no sexual activity going on AT ALL, I would much rather that her sexual activity consist of showing her breasts to another minor IN PERSON than to send an unretractable image than can easily be sent to hundreds, even thousands, of other individuals who are not the intended receipents of such an image.

As for sexual conduct between a minor and an adult then that adult should absolutely be prosecuted same as with an adult in the possesion of child pornography.

Pregnancy and STD's? Obviously very undesirable but at some point almost every human being is going to be exposed to those risks, but there is no need for anyone to be exposed to the risks and humiliation of having a private image shared with the world. Especially not a minor who obtained the technology to put themselves in such a position from the parents who are supposed to protect them all because mommy and daddy were too busy giving into the materialistic whims of their teen to think about the consequences.

PLEASE tell me you are not of child rearing age!

As far as the OP....what the heck are 6th graders doing with phones? Just because their friends might have one isn't an excuse for a parent to buy them one. It's time for parents to start being parents again and stop trying to be their kids friends They can do that "after" they have raised a responsible adult.

It is a very scary world with our naive young ones and all of the technology available. I don't envy any parent raising children today.
Lisa, I totally agree with you on this! Why the heck do kids need cell phones anyway, much less one with cameras? I didn't have a cell phone until 9th grade, when I started taking the bus to high school and joined in after-school activities. The phone was for emergencies only (in case I missed the bus) and needed to call mom for a ride. That's it. Some kids w/ cell phones are responsible, some are not.

A lot of parents do need to start becoming "parents" again. I'm glad that my mom acted like a "mother" and not as a "friend".

Honestly a phone for a kid? What for? We all grew up quite well without most of these luxuries. Believe it or not I played sports, went out and enjoyed life quite well without a phone. Believe it or not I grew up in a a fairly "tough" town and never got hurt or injured without a phone. WE are all guilty of raising a generation of idiots. We want to compare our education to China and other similar places? Come on those kids dont have any of those luxuries. One thing they do have is respect. For some reason we buy kids all these "toys" yet dont teach them the one thing that actually helps them.

even if it has the capability to take pictures, a parent can put parental controls on phones to block picture messagine and to cap texting and/or minutes.
