Hey new jersey, I heard you all have salt box houses out there? I'm so interested in living in one, no matter where!

I just think I'ts cute looking and very old style which is what really made want to live in one.

I am an writer/author, and my dream this year is to own a saltbox house.

I think you can find saltbox houses anywhere in the Northeast. Massachussetts seems to have a lot, as well as Vermont/New Hampshire.

That looks like a colonial style to me.

Quote:
A saltbox house is a type of frame house which is distinguished by having two stories in the front, and one story in the back. This architectural style emerged in New England around 1630, and saltbox homes were built well through the mid-1800s. Today, New England homeowners sometimes restore antique saltbox houses to live in, and several are also maintained by the United States Park Service, for visitors who want to see what life in Colonial New England was like.

The home in the photo is Georgian colonial. The saltbox has an extremely slanted back roof. I've seen a few of these in Hunterdon where I live.

The picture of the Jefferson-Cutter House doesn't really do the design justice. Here is one of the Cooper-Frost-Austin House in Cambridge, MA that gives a much better sense of the profile of the roof line.

Indeed, most saltbox houses do look like colonials from the front elevation. It's the rear of the house that makes it distinctive. Most saltbox houses are more in the New England states. Upstate New York will also have many scattered throughout the Adirondacks.

In New Jersey, the one that pops into mind for me is the Kearny College in Perth Amboy. You can get more info on it from their Facebook page. Another one is up in Roxbury names the Silas Riggs House.

FWIW, there is a little blog site with an entry that explains more about saltbox houses for those interested.

Thank you everyone, your information has been greatful. I really don't know much about saltbox house I just seen one being up for sale in the paper, and the pics where nice, but the location was not where I wanted to be.

I am attracted to it because I know they really don't make those type of housed anymore (i think,) and that old vintage simple look of the house style I am attracted to.

Aloha, and Mahalo

Faith Folau.
