I was just looking at towns in the area, and it seems that Westfield only supplies buses for students that are more than 2.5 miles from the school (not sure if it is straight line or walking distance). So this basically means than no one takes a bus to the high school? 2.5 miles walking time is around 45 minutes, that seems a little long for a 15 year old to do twice a day (I know they need the exercise, but they also need time to study and such). I remember when I was growing up, they set a 1 mile limit and it was considered abusive and changed.

must be nice. where i lived, it was 7 miles away to be able to get a bus.
i had 2 mile limit in high school & used to walk home- i got driven in the morning. it doesn't take 45 minutes to walk 2.5 miles. it takes like 15-20 mins

I think to most people going 2.5 miles in 15 minutes would pretty much be running.

2.5 miles in 15 min is a 6 min mile which is a good run. Average walking speed is prob a 15-20 min/mile so walking 2.5 miles is definitely going to take about 45 min.
Don't most towns give you the option to pay when you are within that zone for bus service? My wife inquired about our school district and was told that for a fee we can get bus service for our kids even though we are within the zone. Doesn't seem quite fair tho as you're paying the same tax rate whether you are 2 miles from the school or 10 miles away.
I live in Westfield. Very few parts of town are 2.5 miles from the high school, which is centrally located. I'm not sure what the distance is for the bus, but AFAIK there is only one for the entire 1600 student high school. Students either walk, ride their bikes, or get dropped off by parents on the way to work or train. Some carpool with other students.
So far, it hasn't been a big deal. My kid walks. Its an aspect of the social scene.
