NJT will some clever reorganizing won't really need that much more capacity into Manhattan as Trains can go into Hoboken instead...

I think its cool even though I'm sure it will never complete, but my question is, what is the point of this?

Is the PATH too crowded? Very few people would choose to pay inflated amtrak prices when they can pay the welcoming universal fare of PATH.
Fare by distance systems turn everybody off to rail transportation, especially in the NYC metro and thats exactly what amtrak would use here.

Yea the PATH is really crowded but honestly I love it. I wish they had more PATH extensions into the Weehawken/Union City area.

The PATH is over Capacity during Rush Hr , but when the Harrison and Journal SQ Revelopment projects are completed by the mid 2020s....it will be over capacity 24/7. The PATH plans on adding more Capacity but even that won't be enough. These Tunnels will do little for the PATH , since most of commuters using the PATH use it to go to the WTC or Jersey City. There needs to be a new Tunnel system between Jersey City and Manhattan....

This Tunnel would be to replace a aging crumbling Twin Tunnel that is wayyy over capacity and this will get built since it makes sense..... There shouldn't be any opposition to this since it will cost less shouldn't go over budget. Also NJ , Feds and NY would chip in , unlike before..... Amtrak is for Intercity Travel replacement of the Airliner , which are now beleave it or not competing with the Acela.... Amtrak is starting slowing chip into the Regions Airport Usage and ridership has grown over the past 10 years.... A New Fleet , Station upgrade and expansion , Wire replacement , Bridge replacement , Signal Replacement and Track replacement is underway.... Tracks , Signals are mostly upgraded , wires , stations and the Fleet need to be replaced.... Bridges and Tunnels will be done in phases.... But Amtrak will expand to service regions like the Lehigh Valley , Lackawanna Corridor , Downstate Delaware corridor , Atlantic Corridor , these restored lines will also allow lines like NJT's West Trenton , MOM network , Philpsburg lines , Flemington line , so it won't just benefit NJ/NY but PA , DE , MD and beyond....... Theres also a plan to extend Metro North's Hudson and New Haven lines into Penn station later this decade...

Perhaps a better distribution of funding on this one than the ARC?

Wasn't this project the one everyone cited as the "right" project when all the hoopla over ARC was going on?

"New Jersey is facing a transportation crisis," he said. "Our commuters are fed up with train delays that make them late to work and endless traffic that traps them on our highways when they want to be home with their families. When the ARC tunnel was canceled, it was clear to me that we couldn’t just throw up our hands and wait years to find another solution."
I have a solution: tell these commuters to move to NY or the Gold Coast along the Hudson.

If NJ doesn't pay for it, fine. But it still doesn't go to where most folks want to or need to go(42nd Street).

So reading the article, this is the tunnel Amtrak wanted to build in 2040, now they are moving it up, hoping to have it done by 2020 or so, tapping into funds from the Fed, NY and NJ. Seems like a win-win-win. The Feds get to showcase a project, NY gets the project they wanted originally and NJ gets some extra capacity for NJ Transit. Maybe they should have thought about this before pissing so much away on ARC.
